While Globe Metals & Mining is currently in negotiations over a Mining Development Agreement with the Malawian government for Kanyika Niobium Project, Shao Yi and Peter Stephens have resigned as Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Globe.
Globe’s Managing Director Alistair Stephens thanked the former chairman,
Mr Shao’s leadership has been through a challenging period for Globe and the broader junior mining market. The Board and I are grateful for his leadership and we wish him the very best for his future endeavours.
At the end of November 2013, Globe took delegates from over 15 African countries to the project site during a three-day regional International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) training workshop. The IAEA was created in 1957 in response to fears and expectations around the discovery of nuclear energy. Today the IAEA serves as the centre of cooperation in the nuclear field.
The IAEA delegates visited the Kanyikia Niobium Project site to see how Globe will manage any radiation generated should Globe be awarded a mining licence. The proposed niobium project contains trace of radioactive material so Globe will need to store this waste product on site.
According to Globe’s website,
Globe has plans in place to minimise and contain the hazardous waste that will be produced
including:Waste disposal plan
Environmental Impact Assessment submitted to the Government of Malawi
Radiation Management Plan
Mine closure and rehabilitation plan
Complying with all Malawi legislation and world’s best practices
Globe Exploration Manager Fergus Jockel explained that Globe will exceed the Malawian government’s environmental standards if necessary,
At the end of the day, you can comply with a country’s regulations all you like but the real yard stick is that if you are not willing to live next to it, why should you expect somebody else to? Thus Globe must strive to achieve the absolute best possible outcome.
