Mining and Human Rights in Malawi
Human Rights Watch is pleased to invite you to a news conference at 09:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at the Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe, Malawi, for the release of a new report, “‘They Destroyed Everything’: Mining and Human Rights in Malawi.”
The report is based on more than 150 interviews conducted in Malawi with people living in mining communities, government officials, company representatives, members of civil society, and mining experts. It details how families living near sites of coal and uranium mining operations in Karonga district face serious problems with water, food, and housing and are not informed about health and other risks of mining. Malawi currently lacks adequate legal standards and safeguards to ensure the necessary balance between development and protecting the rights of communities. The report gives recommendations to the government and to mining companies on how to improve access to information and to prevent and mitigate harms from mining operations.

This is quite interesting subject and its all over the world where mining is taking place ; if the conditions of awarding mining licence requirements – environment , nature rehabilitation, social labour plan , community, pollution and equity were not given nor were not clear to mining houses; it results into this situation.
