Event: Round Table Discussions on Mining, Crossroads Hotel, Lilongwe (5 June, 6-8pm)

ActionAid Malawi, Citizens For Justice and Tilitonse Round Table Discussions

This Thursday, 5 June 2014, a Round Table Discussion with mining experts will be held at 18.00 at Crossroads Hotel, Lilongwe. The event is being organised by ActionAid Malawi and Citizens For Justice.

According to the organisers, the Round Table will bring together all the major stakeholders in the mining industry in Malawi in an effort to harmonise perceptions and in the process to promote inclusiveness amongst the different actors in mining. Stakeholders from government, mining companies, civil society organisations and communities are expected to be present.

The discussion questions are:

  • Is Malawi benefiting from mining?
  • To what extent is Malawi supposed to benefit from mining?

This Round Table Discussion is part of two organisations’ project “Responsive Mining Governance for Equitable and Sustainable Development in Malawi”, which is funded by Tilitonse Fund. The aim of the project is to promote transparency and accountability in the extractive sector for equitable development in Malawi. It seeks to do this through improving collective action amongst civil society organisations to pursue advocacy on mining issues and increasing the technical capacity of CSOs in the Natural Resources Justice Network and communities on mining issues.
