Suspension of Swindlers: Paladin Malawi Suspends Two Employees Caught Stealing Money in Food Procurement

Paladin Malawi, operating Malawi’s largest mine, Kayelekera Uranium Mine, in Karonga, indefinitely suspended its Food Buying Supervisor (Chipiliro Mwenelupembe, the wife of one of Paladin’s exploration geologists) and Food Buying Clerk (Helena Makwakwa) last week according to Nyasa Times.

About MWK 7 million (approx. USD 21,000) has been embezzled by the staff. Both women have been with the company since September 2009 and have allegedly procured food items from suppliers not registered with mine and also supplied the mine through their own (unregistered) businesses. Several suppliers have not received payment for supplied goods.

Reports that Nyasa Times has seen suggest that the normal procedure of direct bank transfer from the company to the suppliers has been followed, however, the women opened accounts for bogus suppliers and received money in this way.

Currently, over 20 groups supply food to the mine.
